Seminar Overview

This certificate seminar provides a comprehensive overview of how finance impacts supply management. Basic terminology used in finance and accounting are defined. Participants learn how to read financial statements and understand how decisions are taken. They will be introduced to using key ratios to interpret financial information. The principles of accounting and budgeting will be presented. Participants will gain an understanding of how supply management practitioners make a business case for an investment and evaluate investment opportunities.

OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this seminar, participants should be able to: 

  • Describe the content that is found in the major sections of each of the statements.
  • Assemble appropriate accounts to create a simple Income Statement and Balance
  • Sheet for a business.
  • Use examples to illustrate the concept of liquidity and be able to describe the
  • relationship of The Cash Flow Statement to the other three statements.
  • Relate financial, investing and operating decisions to financial statements.
  • Have a general understanding of the accounting process.
  • Use basic accounting terms correctly.
  • Trace the flow of accounting information from the Income Statement through the Statement of Retained Earnings and into the Balance Sheet.


Instructor: Wendy Nguyen

Wendy Nguyen has over eight years of experience in public and private sector supply chain management (SCM). Wendy is currently a Senior Consultant in Enterprise Risk Management at the Ontario Treasury Board Secretariat and has worked in various SCM roles within the Ontario government.  Prior to working in SCM, Wendy led a not-for-profit organization that designed and ran financial literacy programs for post-secondary and secondary schools across Canada.  She has a Bachelor of Arts and Science from McMaster University, is a Certified Supply Chain Management Professional (CSCMP) designation holder and currently studying for the Canadian Risk Management designation.  From trying to be a more efficient road cyclist to 5S-ing her kitchen, Wendy applies an SCM lens to many aspects of her life.

This seminar can be taken:

  • towards the SMT Certificate - one of the six required seminars 
  • for CSCMP designation maintenance - worth 10 Continuous Professional Development Credits

Seminar Cancellation/Refund Policy:

A full refund will be issued on cancellations received in writing at least 10 business days prior to the seminar/course start date. An administration fee of $150.00 is applicable if notification is received between three and nine days prior to start date. Thereafter no refund will be available. Substitutions and transfer of registrations is permissible when received in writing three business days before the seminar/course start date. Please note that credits to be used for future offerings are valid for 12 months from the date of initial payment and will expire if not used in that time frame.

Seminar Cancellation/Rescheduling:

In the event of a seminar being cancelled or rescheduled, prior notification will be given to registrants by phone or e-mail, with the option of a full refund of registration fees or transfer of registration to another SCMAO offering.

Registrations must be received no later than 3 days prior to the start date to allow time for processing confirmation.

Attendees will  receive a confirmation email with the specific seminar details, such as room number shortly after registering for the event.
